Medtronic Physio-Control, one of the major AED manufacturers, has developed an interactive program designed to help people refresh their skills in using AEDs. Medtronic Physio-Control has graciously granted us permission to use this program to show you how an AED is used in a rescue situation. The program uses a LifePak 500 AED, the use of which is fairly standard for all AEDs.

If you decide to try the simulation, you will be downloading a demonstration version of the program onto your computer. Please understand, THIS DEMONSTRATION IS NO SUBSTITUTE FOR ON-HANDS TRAINING. ITS ONLY PURPOSE IS TO SHOW YOU HOW AN AED IS USED IN A RESCUE SITUATION.

It is suggested that you print this page prior to beginning the download

  1. Click on the link, www.AEDChallenge.com
  2. Click on ‘Download PC Demo’
  3. On the next screen, Click on, ‘Click to begin download’
  4. On next screen, click on, ‘Run this program from its current location’. Then click ‘OK’
  5. On following screens, click, ‘Yes’,’Next’,’Agree’, ‘Next’, and ‘Finish’
  6. Once the download is complete (time depends on the speed of your connection), you may be sent back to the AED Challenge page. If so, close it
  7. Go to your list of programs. You will see on with a red heart with a yellow lightening bolt across it. It will be identified as AED Challenge 2.1 Demo. Click on it
  8. Click ‘Start’
  9. Type in your name and be sure ‘Tutorial’ is checked
  10. From this point, the program will prompt you through the steps of using the AED. Use your mouse to make your selections, to place the electrodes, and to press the ‘Shock” button.

NOTE: In the demo, two shocks are sufficient to convert the victim from cardiac arrest. In real life, it may take more or less. The AED will analyze and shock up to three times. Then a minute of CPR is performed. After a minute, the AED will analyze and shock up to three more times followed by another minute of CPR and so on.

This demonstration is not a substitute for training conducted by a certified instructor. In a four- hour course, students learn to clear obstructed airways, perform adult CPR, and use AEDs through a variety of practice scenarios. (See Training LINK)
