In December 2000, we
barely knew what defibrillators were. After Greg’s death, both of us, John
and Rachel Moyer, and both his sisters, Katie and Abbie, took the American
Heart Association Heartsaver AED course. John and Rachel went on to become
certified instructors because we wanted to learn all that we could to help
others implement AED programs that might save the life of another young
person who should not have died so soon. Since then, we have battled with
AED manufacturers over prices, dissected statements made by those wishing
to sell AEDs, trained many people in their correct use, spoken to
countless civic organizations and school boards, written a score of
articles, worked with legislators in two states to get AED legislation
passed, and talked to far too many parents whose children were taken from
them far too soon Throughout, we have tried to champion public access
defibrillation programs wherever they may be needed.
Rachel is
presently a teacher; John used to be. We are not supported by any single
AED manufacturer. This allows us to be completely objective in the
statements we make. The views expressed in this web site are ours and ours
alone based on our experiences since December 2, 2000. Our hope is that by
sharing our experience, you may be able to avoid some of the pitfalls we
encountered along the way.
We
welcome your questions and comments.
