Heart Safe County
Heart Safe Communities give everyone
struck down by sudden cardiac arrest an optimum chance for full recovery.
In these communities, schools, churches, businesses, and other places
where people gather make automated external defibrillators (AEDs)
accessible for use by employees and trained members of the general public
in the event of cardiac emergencies.
Without timely CPR and early
defibrillation, cardiac arrest is almost always fatal. The first person on
the scene is often in the best position to provide effective life-saving
treatment. Citizens in Heart Safe Communities know the signs and symptoms
of this silent killer and are prepared to take steps to increase survival
rates.
We endorse efforts to designate Monroe
County, Pennsylvania a Heart Safe County. Furthermore, we encourage
continued
-
Education of the general
public in the risk factors associated with, the signs and symptoms of, and
the treatment for sudden cardiac arrest
-
Implementation of the
cardiac chain of survival, made up of early notification of trained
emergency help, rapid CPR, timely defibrillation, and early advanced
emergency medical treatment
-
Public access defibrillation
programs, including the availability of Automated External Defibrillators
(AEDs) throughout our communities wherever groups of people gather, and
-
Continued widespread
training of the general public in the skills of CPR and the use of AEDs.
Finally, we thank those who have already
acquired and deployed AEDs, as well as those citizens who have taken the
time to be trained in their use. AED placement and training of lay
responders are critical steps in strengthening Monroe County’s cardiac
safety net.
